Lesson 4 - Making and Describing Patterns

Use these interactive games and activities to encourage students to have fun on the Web while learning about making and describing patterns. Students can try these activities on their own or in pairs.

 

Goals

Use objects sorted by one attribute to create a pattern.

Describe the pattern and pattern rules.

 

Instructions for Use

 

Count Us In - Game 2 lets students make patterns in a room using objects sorted by one attribute.

To use Count Us In - Game 2, drag and drop objects on the bookshelf to make patterns on the bed, walls, floor, and hat. Click the "play again" button to for a new number of objects.

 

Colour Patterns is an interactive program that prompts students to fill in four colours in the pattern sequence.

To use Colour Patterns, click on the colours that follow the pattern sequence. Problems can be checked interactively by clicking the "Check Answer" button. Feedback is given for both correct and incorrect answers. Feedback for incorrect answers includes hints for students. To continue with the next problem, click the "New Problem" button.

 

Pattern Builder lets students create a pattern with sound.

To use Pattern Builder, have students click on the piano keys to create a pattern. Click the "Play Pattern" button to hear the pattern. Click the "Sounds" button to change the sound of the pattern. Click the "New Pattern" button to create a new pattern.

 

Pattern Mania prompts students to complete a pattern sequence.

To use Pattern Mania, have students study the pattern sequence and click on the object to correctly continue the sequence. Click the "Next" button to see the next sequence.
