Lesson 1 - Counting on a Number Line

To encourage students to have fun on the Web while learning about Counting on a Number Line, here are some games and interactive activities they can do on their own or in pairs.

 

Goals

Count on and back to find sums and differences.

Use the commutative property to simplify counting on.

 

Instructions for Use

Number Line Counting lets students visualize adding or subtracting numbers on a number line.

To use Number Line Counting, select the "-" button at the bottom of the screen. Click the "Go" button under the mathematical problem. Animated arcs represent the problem. Click the "New Problem" button and a new problem will be displayed. To show an addition problem on the number line, select the "+" button at the bottom of the screen.

 

Number Line Express lets students count forward and backward on a number line.

To use Number Line Express, drag the pointer to choose where students want to go on the number line. Click the "Go" button.

 

Place Value Number Line lets students explore place value by placing dots on number lines.

To use Place Value Number Line, have students click on the red dot at the top and drag it to the number line to match the value shown.
